The 'real' Hotel Rwanda Hero

In November 2005 Alison Hill secured a one-on-one interview with Paul Rusesabagina, the real-life hero portrayed in the movie Hotel Rwanda. This exclusive interview was taped following a speech given by Rusesabagina to 5,000 students at the Colorado Convention Center. Mr. Rusesabagina was awarded the Presidential Medal for Freedom just days prior to this taping.

When Rwanda plummeted into genocide in April 1994, Paul Rusesabagina, a Hutu married to a Tutsi woman, turned his hotel into an impromptu refugee camp for more than 1200 terrified Tutsis and moderate Hutus.Deserted by international peacekeepers, Rusesabagina began cashing in every favor he had ever earned, bribing the Rwandan Hutu soldiers and keeping the bloodthirsty militia outside the gates, during the hundred days of slaughter. In the end he survived along with his wife and three children, as did most of the refugees he sheltered. However the 1994 genocide claimed an estimated 800,000 lives, mainly Tutsis but also many moderate Hutus.

In the movie Hotel Rwanda,
Paul Rusesabagina is portrayed by Don Cheadle.

Some memorable quotes from this special interview:

"The only thing I was sure of during the Rwandan genocide was to be killed.
The only questions I was asking myself were: When? Where? How? Who would do it?
At What time? To die was the only thing I was sure of.."

"The movie was very kind to the United Nations..."

"The whole of Africa is a killing field - what we need from a strong country - from
the leaders of the world like the U.S. - is for them to stand up and say
no to the killings."

"With my book - "An Ordinary Man - An Autobiography" my main objective - just
like Hotel Rwanda - is to make a classic - a book which will be read by young
generations - a message to young generations."

Alison Hill's Global Agenda Highlights:

The  Civil War In Uganda - the premiere episode of Global Agenda -  and one of Alison's favorites. The program examines the complex, on-going civil war in Northern Uganda and its devastating effects on civilians. Extensive research yielded compelling guest panelists who were able to articulate first-hand accounts of this under-reported humanitarian disaster and provide exclusive footage from Uganda.

                        Chaim Yavin
A conversation with Chaim Yavin - Israel's veteran news anchorman - often dubbed the Walter Cronkite of Israel. Includes insightful footage from the documentary series on the West Bank and Gaza, "Land of the Settlers" for which Chaim Yavin has been harshly criticized from both sides of the political spectrum in Israel.  Chaim has a four-decade career in broadcasting and has provided extensive coverage of the Middle East conflict.

        Dr. Kevin Bales, President,
             "Free The Slaves"

Human Trafficking/Modern Slavery
Alison has produced two shows concerning the appalling practice of human trafficking and modern slavery worldwide. She worked  with one of the nation's top experts on this subject and with the world renowned organization Free the Slaves;  exposing viewers to the horrifying circumstances facing an estimated
27 million people enslaved worldwide in virtually every country - including the U.S.A. Footage of young girls being smuggled across the U.S./Mexican border shows the extent of the sex trade here and abroad, and stone cutters from a small community in India add an element of hope as they recall their successful fight for freedom.

           The Falun Gong Emblem

Falun Dafa (Falun Gong) is an advanced practice for the Mind and Body, deeply rooted in traditional Chinese culture. The practice is based on the universal principles of Truthfulness, Compassion and Tolerance. However Falun Gong was banned in July 1999 by former Chinese leader, Jiang Zemin, who viewed the growing populairty of this practice as a threat to his power. He launched a brutal persecution campaign against practitioners and since then thousands have been detained, tortured and sent to forced labor camps. As Porducer of Global Agenda  Alison was able to fly two very special guests in from New York to participate on the show. Dr. Charles Lee was imprisoned for three years in China and was tortured for his beliefs. Dr. Wenyi Wang was arrested outside the Whitehouse for protesting the visit of Communist Chinese leader Hu Jintao.
