The 'real' Hotel Rwanda Hero

Alison Hill with Paul Rusesabagina and his wife Tatiana, at a Denver reception. In the movie Hotel Rwanda, Rusesabagina is portrayed by Don Cheadle

Paul Rusesabagina
In November 2005, Alison Hill produced and directed a one-on-one interview with
Paul Rusesabagina, the hotelier portrayed in the movie Hotel Rwanda. When Rwanda plummeted into genocide in April1994, Rusesabagina turned his hotel into an impromptu refugee camp for more than 1200 terrified Tutsis and moderate Hutus. Deserted by international peacekeepers, Rusesabagina began cashing in favors and bribing Rwandan Hutu soldiers, keeping the bloodthirsty militia outside the gates during the 100 days of slaughter. In the end, he survived, along with his wife and three children, as did most of the refugees he sheltered. However, the 1994 genocide claimed an estimated 800,000 lives, mostly Tutsis,   but also many moderate Hutus.
